Worship at GFPC with Dr. Mel A. Strain

Welcome to the website for the Guntersville First Presbyterian Church!  Our mission is to glorify God, make disciples of Jesus Christ, and meet human need.

We invite you, friends and family to attend one of our Sunday worship services at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.  You are also invited to study scripture with us in one of our Sunday school classes for all ages sandwiched between our two worship services at 10:00 a.m.

Our traditional worship service is conducted on Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. in our historic sanctuary located on Gunter Avenue.  If you plan to visit our beautiful, historic church as part of North Alabama's Hallelujah Trail, plan to be greeted by a friendly church family eager to make you feel at home at GFPC.  Parking is located in front, to the side, and in the rear of the church sanctuary.

You may also join us at our early, casual worship service at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings.  Worship in an informal, "laid back" atmosphere with modern hymns, multimedia elements, and contemporary praise instrumentation.  Early worship is held in the family-friendly surroundings of our fellowship hall with a nursery located just downstairs.  A ramp provides wheelchair accessibility from the sidewalk on Gunter Avenue and is also used by those who walk to church.  Coffee and light breakfast foods are provided.

A Growing Church in Transition

Guntersville First Presbyterian Church is currently in a state of growth and transition between full-time pastors.  This is an exciting time for our church; the opportunities are endless!  Dr. Mel A. Strain is the Interim Pastor of GFPC during this period of growth and transition.

Dr. Strain grew up in New Jersey, but he spent most of his years after college in the Midwest.  He has served churches in Indiana and Illinois before coming to Alabama in 1997.  Most recently, Dr. Strain was the Associate Pastor of Congregational Care at the First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville until 2006 when he semi-retired.

During the past three years, Dr. Strain has served congregations primarily through pulpit supply.  In his spare time, he has taken up the hobby of scroll sawing in which he does portraits and other intricate designs in wood.  His wife, Rita, has a background in human resources and is also involved in various craft activities, including painting and quilting.

During this interim period in which the GFPC congregation will be seeking new, permanent pastoral leadership,  Dr. Strain and Rita will be residing in Guntersville the better part of each week.

Dr. Strain and Rita look forward to the opportunity of meeting each member of the GFPC congregation and visitors considering making GFPC their church home.  E-mail Dr. Strain with questions or comments.

New Sunday School Class - You're Invited!

You're invited to participate in a new adult Sunday School class that has just started  upstairs in Brock Hall at 10 a.m. on Sundays after the early worship service.  Dr. Strain is teaching the class, and everyone is welcome to attend.  It isn't too late to jump aboard!
